I often hear patients say, “But doesn’t everyone have adrenal fatigue?” My response… “Usually, yes.” Why you ask? Because our society is stressed out, big time! As a whole, we don’t get enough sleep, we work too much, eat a crappy diet, stimulate ourselves with caffeine at 3pm, and rarely stop to smell the roses. Or if we do, we sneeze because our allergies are going crazy. We are also walking around in the midst of a toxic and irradiated world. This is why our adrenals are a little wigged out.
What do the Adrenal Glands do?
Everything! They are predominately our stress handlers of the body. But they also manage inflammation, blood sugar and fluid balance. They make the backbone of sex hormones, work with the thyroid to run metabolism, and that is just the short list.
The most important message is, out of control inflammation is the cause of all chronic diseases.
If our adrenals worked properly, they could manage that inflammation. When inflammation gets out of control we classically load up on steroids. An MD once told me that “A short 7 day taper of prednisone will cause no adrenal suppression, so no adrenal support is warranted.” Bull! Obviously the adrenals are severely deficient in the first place if steroid medications are even being considered. This is a cause for even more adrenal support in my opinion!
Most people need adrenal support to either prevent inflammation from worsening and going toward a disease state or to help your body appropriately handle stress for other reasons. Steroid use is an obvious indication for adrenal support, but if you are still questioning, here are some other common adrenal related symptoms to look for:
